Why is July 21 Special in Yoga?
The Full Moon Reset aligns with the powerful energies of the full moon and the sacred celebration of Guru Purnima. This is a unique opportunity to deepen your yoga practice and pay homage to the wisdom of our teachers and mentors. The full moon symbolizes completion, reflection, and release, making it the perfect time to reset and rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit. Guru Purnima, a day dedicated to honoring spiritual teachers, adds a profound layer of significance to our practice, reminding us of the transformative guidance we receive on our yoga journey.
Together, we'll embrace sound bowl relaxation, meditation, and community connection, fostering a sense of inner peace and collective harmony. Don’t miss this chance to celebrate and reset with us in a meaningful and nurturing environment.
Celebrating Guru Purnima: Honoring the First Guru and the Birth of Yoga
Guru Purnima, observed on the first full moon after the summer solstice in the month of Ashadha (July-August), is a sacred day marking the initial transmission of the Yogic sciences from Shiva, the Adiyogi or first Yogi, to his first disciples, the Saptarishis—the seven celebrated sages. On this day, Shiva became the Adi Guru, the first Guru, and the Saptarishis carried this wisdom throughout the world. To this day, every spiritual process on the planet draws from the foundation of knowledge established by the Adiyogi.
The word “Guru” in Sanskrit translates to “dispeller of darkness.” A Guru illuminates the seeker's path, dispelling ignorance and allowing them to experience the source of creation within. Guru Purnima is traditionally a time when seekers express their gratitude to their Gurus and receive their blessings. It is also considered an especially auspicious day for practicing Yogic sadhana and meditation.
Why Do We Celebrate Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima is celebrated as the day the first Guru was born, marking the beginning of the timeless science of Yoga. On this day, Shiva the Adiyogi opened up the possibility for humans to transcend natural limitations. As Sadhguru says, “It is on this day, for the very first time in the history of humanity, that human beings were reminded that they are not a fixed life. If they are willing to strive, every door in existence is open.”
